Dentists Willing to Work with Multiple Dental Sensitivities

I had a root canal treatment which went wrong. The file broke off in the tooth. It’s still there and now the tooth is infected again. The bigger problem I have is my allergies and sensitivity. I was having some issues and went and had some serious allergy testing done. I’m allergic to dental cement, formaldehyde, cobalt, chromium, titanium, as well as a host of other common metals.
Is there a dentist with expertise for people in my situation?

You’ve got a tricky situation. I don’t think you’ll find a dentist with expertise in your area. Instead, what you need is to locate a dentist willing to work around your dental allergies. Some patients come in with the controversial Clifford’s test which listed out a bunch of allergies.

Many dentists will just refuse to listen to the results and expect the patient just to deal with the materials available.

Finding a Dentist Willing to Work with a Patient’s Allergies and Sensitivities

Your best bet will be to look for a holistic dentist. They are much more willing to work around any limitation a patient has. They’ll be creative and look for solutions. It’s not totally unheard of for a root canal treatment to fail. Chances of it succeeding go down with each re-try. If it turns out the tooth has to be extracted, a dentist will likely recommend a dental implant.

This is the best tooth replacement option. Most dentists use a titanium implant. With your allergy, you’ll need someone willing to provide you with a zirconia dental implant. These are metal-free and will work better for your allergies.

I chose a holistic dentist because I figured I would get healthier options for preventing problems with my teeth or for treating them. 3 weeks ago I went to a holistic dentist because of a horrible toothache I’ve had over a month. I had been putting off getting dental treatment because I was afraid of what might be recommended. Typically I have so many reactions to medications and chemicals that I was hesitant about getting antibiotics. A friend suggested her holistic dentist and it sounded like a good idea. Well, the dentist did an exam and told me that she needed to extract my tooth. I was shocked, but my pain level was so high that I couldn’t argue with her. So now that the tooth is healing, the dentist is talking about a dental implant. Another friend of mine that also had a horrible toothache had her tooth saved with a root canal treatment. Are holistic dentists against root canal treatment? If so, I think I should switch back to a regular dentist before I have any more problems with my teeth. Keturah – Holistic dentists are not necessarily against root canal treatment. Although Dr. Krutchik would have needed to examine your tooth before it was extracted, there are several reasons that extraction might be the best option.

Why a Holistic Dentist Might Have Extracted Your Tooth

1. Advanced Decay

Root canal treatment is not usually performed for tooth decay. But when decay is advanced, sometimes a tooth can’t be saved. In those cases, even a holistic dentist would extract your tooth.

2. Trauma

A badly broken tooth can sometimes be saved with a root canal treatment and crown. But if the break has damaged tooth roots or is too extensive to restore, it will be extracted.

3. Improper Eruption

A tooth that erupts in the wrong position can cause other teeth to shift. It can even damage nearby teeth. It’s often best to extract the tooth rather than to allow it to damage other teeth. A holistic dentist will do what’s best for your overall oral health.

4. Orthodontic Treatment

Some orthodontists extract teeth to allow room for proper tooth alignment. This can occur when a patient’s jaw is too small for proper tooth alignment.

Root Canal or Extraction?

I’m big into holistic dental care, but there seems to be some argument between root canals and extractions. Some say that root canals leave bacteria in your system and therefore an extraction is the better option. I’m feeling torn. On the one hand I don’t want to have bacteria on my system, while on the other hand, I don’t want to lose a tooth either. Do you have a recommendation before I commit?

It’s always hard when experts disagree. While there is a fringe group of dentists who don’t believe in root canal treatments, most holistic dentists, however, will still do them.

As for the bacteria, even a healthy body has both good and bad bacteria. It helps our immune system to fight infections. If we never had any of that bacteria in our system, the moment we were infected our body wouldn’t have the means to fight it. Some bacteria is healthy. Too much is not.

When you have a root canal it gets out the infection. There may be minute amounts of bacteria left in some tubuals, but they’re not a problem.

With an extraction, you now have to think about replacements. Not only is that an added expense, sometimes quite high, but there are other risks. If you get the best replacement, a dental implant, you’re talking about surgery and all the risks involved with that.

If, instead, you choose to get a dental bridge, they are much harder to get completely clean than natural teeth and then you’re talking about bacteria again, along with the added risks of decay.

I’m always a big believer in saving as much natural tooth structure as possible. If a root canal will do that, I’d go that route.

Healing Cavities with Nutrition

I keep reading online how to reverse a cavity with nutrition. I think I’m missing something though. Although my cavity isn’t getting bigger, it is not getting smaller either. Would a Holistic Dentist be able to help me with the missing ingredients?

The reason your cavity isn’t getting smaller is because you can’t heal a cavity by nutrition. We’ve seen the natural health sites that advocate this. While Dr. Hadgis is a Holistic Dentist, he also will only do something which is backed by real evidence. There has been no evidence indicating what they are advocating works.

What is in the works is being able to re-grow teeth. Though, even this is still in the beginning stages using stem cell research. It is very promising.

Be careful of assuming the cavity isn’t growing. While it may not be growing wider, it could very well be burrowing deeper. If it reaches the pulp you will need a root canal treatment and very likely a dental crown.

How a Holistic Dentist Can Aide You

What a holistic dentist can help you with is in finding alternative fillings. Instead of an amalgam filling, they’ll provide you with a mercury-free composite filling. They only work with healthy, bio-compatible materials.

In addition to being mercury-free, they also know how to do a sanitary amalgam removal. So, if you have any silver fillings left in your mouth, they can safely remove it so you don’t inhale the mercury.

Don’t put off getting this looked at. You don’t want it to suddenly blow up into a dental emergency.

Can Holistic Dentists Get Rid of Migraines

I get migraines several days a week. Sometimes, I get them every day. My doctor has investigated all the causes currently known to no avail. I recently read that a holistic dentist can treat them by removing any silver in your mouth. Is this true? I’m afraid to get my hopes up.

Can holistic dentists cure headaches?

I’m sorry you’ve been suffering so much with migraines. As someone who gets them as well, I know how absolutely miserable they are. I don’t know the article you’re referring to, but I do know the thinking behind it.

There are studies showing that amalgam fillings contribute to a variety of health problems both biological and neurological. The thinking is the high mercury content in these fillings are the cause. I cannot guarantee that removing them will get rid of your migraines. What I can say is that a holistic dentist will be much more willing and qualified to exchange them for mercury-free fillings.

Holistic dentists are more willing to consider treatment options other dentists blow off. They’re interested in the effects of their care on your entire body, not just your teeth.

What Will the Holistic Dentist Do?

They’ll do what’s known as a sanitary amalgam removal. This utilizes a stopper dam, cold water, and a fan. All these are to protect you from swallowing or inhaling any mercury or mercury vapors. Then, when all traces of amalgam fillings are gone, they can replace them with white composite fillings. They’re completely mercury-free.

I cannot guarantee this will heal the cause of your migraines, but it certainly won’t make them worse. Even if the migraines remain, composite fillings are much healthier for your body and your teeth than their silver counterparts.

There are actually two dental issues which can lead to migraines. We’ll start with your specific question about holistic dentists first. The beauty of a holistic dentist is their consideration of the whole body, not just your teeth. As far as the cause of migraines, yes, there are studies which seem to indicate that the mercury in amalgam (silver) fillings can cause migraines.

Both a holistic dentist and a mercury-free dentist would be willing and qualified to switch out your silver fillings for composite (white) fillings. The reason I say qualified is you need a dentist who knows how to do a sanitary amalgam removal, which keeps you from inhaling any mercury vapors or swallowing any bits of the filling.

Another Migraine Cause Solved by Dentists

Many people don’t realize that migraines can be a symptom of TMJ Disorder. See if you can find a holistic dentist with a great deal of TMJ expertise as well. Do I Need to Pick My Poison Between Mercury or BPA?

I’ve been told the mercury in my amalgam fillings is bad for me and I need to switch them out for the newer white fillings, which are mercury-free. But, now I’m hearing that the white fillings contain BPA which is supposedly just as bad. So, do I pick my poison or do I just extract the offending teeth?

You must feel like you’re being asked to choose between death by poison A or poison B. Fortunately for you, there is an option C, which has no poison. There are now tooth colored BPA free fillings, but not all dentists are aware of them or use them yet.

You probably already know that the American Dental Association (ADA) says that both the mercury in amalgam fillings and the BPA in composite fillings are safe. But, it’s understandable that patients aren’t as confident.

Holistic Dentists Understand Your Concerns

Among dentists, you’ll find a wide range of opinions. Some are staunchly with the ADA and think the whole controversy is contrived. Some are worried they’re inadvertently harming patients and are actively looking for alternatives. And some are in the middle and just provide what their patient’s ask for.

If you’re concerned about the effects of mercury and BPA on your body, you’ll need to find a dentist willing to go the extra mile to work with you. Your best option is to find a holistic dentist. Explain your concerns. If they’re not aware of the BPA free fillings, you can tell them about them. As holistic dentists, they should be willing to try them.

Don’t Extract Teeth Unnecessarily

I know it probably sounds safer just to replace your teeth, but believe me, it will be something you’ll regret. Natural tooth structure is always better. And who’s to say in ten or twenty years if they won’t suddenly discover the titanium in dental implants is dangerous too.

Need a Holistic Dentist for Dry Socket

I’m having severe pain after a tooth extraction. After doing some research I think it’s dry socket. My lower jaw is throbbing so much I just want to chop it off. I called my dentist and he offered to call me in a prescription; a narcotic of course. I don’t want that. I prefer to keep my body away from things that can harm it. Would a holistic dentist help me?

I agree with you on not using harmful substances. I am also a believer in finding the cause behind the pain and not just masking the pain. The reason for that is sometimes masking pain can cause more problems. I don’t mean you just have to stay in pain, but I would like to make sure there’s nothing else going on that would require treatment.

Normally, I’d tell you to go back to your dentist and have them examine the area and find the root cause. However, you already tried that. He didn’t seem that interested in investigating. That bothers me. So, here’s what I’m going to recommend.

You don’t want a narcotic. That’s okay. You could try an over-the-counter pain reliever. If you already have and it didn’t help or if you don’t feel comfortable with those either, I’ll suggest treating it with clove oil. It’s been in use as a pain reliever since the first century. Not only can it provide numbing but it can also kill germs. This will be a good temporary stop measure until you can get in to see a holistic dentist.

Benefits of Holistic Dentistry

It sounds to me like you and your dentist are not on the same page in your philosophy of medical care. You may need to find a dentist who believes in your natural medicine. A holistic dentist will do that. They won’t give you any treatment that will introduce something unhealthy into your body.

For instance, they’d never give you an amalgam filling. Instead, they’d be sure to give you mercury-free fillings, such as a composite filling.

Additionally, if you wanted to remove your amalgam fillings, you wouldn’t have to worry about inhaling any mercury material or mercury vapors. Holistic dentists only do sanitary amalgam removal, protecting their patients from any harmful substances.

They’re also more willing to care about your concerns about painkillers, where your current dentist is likely to just blow you off.

Will a Holistic Dentist Take Me Seriously?

I have had multiple health problems I can’t explain and neither could my doctors. Massive hives, pain in my muscles and joints, exhaustion. The doctors said it was all in my head, though I’m not sure how I could manufacture hives which they could see. Then they said I should just eat better and exercise more. I did. I went on a strict diet. I began exercising every day. I lost 40 pounds, which was fantastic, but that didn’t stop the hives, pain, and fatigue. I decided I’d have to figure things out myself. I did some research and learned about the Cliffords’ Test. It took me a while to find a doctor who did them. When I took it, the results showed I have massive metal sensitivities and allergies. I thought about all my dental work. I have silver fillings, several metal-based crowns, and even a titanium implant (which I told is a rare allergy but apparently I’m rare. I spoke with my dentist about it and he said he doesn’t put much stock in that test and I need to give all this up. But, how do you forget about pain and hives?

You will find that Holistic dentists are better in situations like this. They will also take precautions based on the results of your Clifford Material Reactivity Test.

Every bit of your dental work which you have can be replaced with metal-free work. We’ll start with your filings. They can be switched out for mercury-free composite fillings. Here you’re at an advantage if you do go to a holistic dentist because they know how to do a sanitary amalgam removal.

Do You Need a Holistic Dentist When You Have Lyme Disease?

I’ve recently been diagnosed with Lyme Disease. I’ve been doing a lot of reading about it and discovered that Yolanda Hadid also has Lyme. She said that in order to get better she had to go to a holistic dentist who removed all her fillings. Do I need to do that too? What do you replace them with?

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I know several people struggling with this. It’s still controversial at the moment and treatment has had varying levels of success. There’s still a lot of research being done on this to try to help people struggling.

I’m aware of the story about Yolanda Hadid. The type of filling she had removed were silver amalgam fillings. She did that because they’re made mostly of mercury. The theory is the having mercury in your system, which is toxic, impedes the healing process.

You don’t have to see a holistic dentist to remove them. But, you will need to see someone who knows how to do a sanitary amalgam removal. This protects you from inhaling any mercury vapors or swallowing any bits int he process. Quite a few mercury-free dentists know the sanitary procedure and likely every holistic dentist.

What Type of Fillings Will You Get with a Holistic Dentist?

A holistic dentist would never give you an amalgam filling because of the mercury content. Instead, they replace the silver fillings with composite white fillings. These have zero mercury content and actually strengthen your teeth instead of weakening them the way the silver fillings do.

In addition, they’re more careful about every substance they put in your body and tend to treat your whole body instead of just your teeth.
